Increasing Agency through Choice: Honoring Expert Learners in Higher Education

Have you considered how much agency adults experience within higher education settings? Have you ever attempted to increase opportunities for choice within a classroom or faculty meeting? Join us to explore the relationship between flexibility and individual agency in higher education. In this session, participants will reflect on qualitative and quantitative data and consider the impact of choice on individual experience in higher education settings. Participants will then analyze case studies of class sessions or faculty meeting agendas to identify examples of choices that they can bring back to their own institutions. To close the session, participants will practice revising an upcoming faculty meeting agenda or class session to include additional opportunities for choice that will honor expert learners’ knowledge of themselves.
